Mover’s Checklist

We’ve created a handy checklist to help make your move easier.

Start and plan your move

When the move is happening

  • Sell your home or terminate your rental agreement.

  • Plan your moving schedule. Check possible moving dates, keeping in mind busy periods like month-end and weekends.

  • Schedule any renovations and rent storage if necessary.

How to do the move

  • Once your moving date is set, request a quote from a moving service. Accept the quote and book the service.

  • Order moving boxes. Opiskelijamuutot delivers moving boxes when you include this in the request form.

  • If you're moving by yourself, recommended moving crew sizes:

    • 1–2 rooms + kitchen = 2–4 people

    • 3–4 rooms + kitchen = 3–5 people

    • Over 5 rooms + kitchen = 4–7 people

What items have to be moved

  • If you have items for recycling, start planning packing around them. Let us know in your quote request form if you need transport to a recycling center—Student Moves offers this during your move.

Change of address notification

  • Post and Digital Population Register: Submit a change of address on the Posti website. This will update your details in both the Posti and Digital and Population Data Services systems. You can do this up to one month before and no later than one week after your move.

  • Electricity provider: Inform your electricity company to ensure power is on at your new place.

  • Insurance company: Notify your insurance provider and check if your home insurance covers the new property. Confirm that coverage remains valid during the move.

  • Internet provider: Contact your internet provider to transfer your internet to your new address. Delivery time may take 1–2 weeks depending on the area.

  • Other notifications: Inform your employer and services you use. The Posti notification usually updates your address to authorities and banks. If you have children, notify their new daycare or school.

Packing materials

  • Get your packing materials well in advance. Plan your packing and go through your belongings, including storage spaces.

  • Recommended supplies: bubble wrap, tape, string, packing paper, corrugated cardboard, markers, etc.

Storage

  • If you need extra storage, rent a unit. Find the nearest Cityvarasto and choose a suitable mini-storage. When you book moving services from Opiskelijamuutot, you can include storage transport too.

Packing for the move

1–2 weeks before moving:

  • Start packing items you rarely use. Label boxes during packing so they go to the right place in your new home.

  • Stack boxes with 4–5 cm of empty space at the top for easy stacking.

  • Label boxes immediately after packing them to speed up unpacking.

  • Wrap fragile items (paintings, mirrors) in cardboard or bubble wrap and protect corners with corner guards or corrugated cardboard.

  • Disassemble furniture if possible.

  • Secure drawers and pack shelves using stretch film (available at Cityvarasto).

  • Wrap dishes in packing paper or bubble wrap. Use cardboard dividers for glasses.

  • Pack clothes, linens, and soft toys in strong trash bags.

  • Protect plants with plastic bags. In cold weather, also use paper or fabric.

  • Remove and pack ceiling lights using protective materials.

  • Use garment bags or wardrobe boxes for clothes on hangers (available at Cityvarasto).

  • Cover mattresses, sofas, and armchairs with protective covers.

  • Disconnect large appliances and secure cords with stretch film or tape.

  • Roll and wrap rugs with stretch film or a rug sock (available at Cityvarasto in two sizes).

  • Pack essential items (keys, documents, clothes, hygiene items) separately in a visible bag or box for easy access.

  • Mark furniture that goes to storage or recycling.

  • Make sure everything is packed a couple of days before moving day for a faster move.

Moving out cleaning

  • Start with time-consuming tasks like window washing.

  • Plan ahead and clean cupboard shelves while you're packing.

Moving Day

  • If you've booked Opiskelijamuutot, we will notify you when we leave the base or are on the way.

  • Upon arrival, our experienced team will check for the best parking spot for the moving truck.

  • On busy streets, secure a parking spot in advance.

  • We will review the items and plan the optimal loading order for the truck.

  • Do the final cleaning. Plan ahead for this to make it easier.

In your new home

  • Inspect your new home and report any issues to the property manager or landlord.

  • Test or install a smoke alarm—it's legally required in all homes.

  • Submit a move-in notification to the maintenance company so your name is updated on door signs and in the stairwell.

Not enough time to do it all? No worries—whatever help you need, ask from us. Opiskelijamuutot is here for you!
