Internet Connection to the new home
We’ve put together information for you on what to consider when transferring your internet connection from one address to another. Read the article to learn what needs to be taken into account.
Transferring Your Internet Connection to a New Address
An internet connection is provided through a service subscription. Transferring it to a new address is an important step during a move. It’s advisable to take care of the transfer properly and well in advance. A good rule of thumb is to arrange the transfer about two weeks before the move to ensure a smooth transition of service to your new home.
The first step is to find out what kind of connection is available in your new home. It’s possible that there’s already a working connection that you can use. On the other hand, if the type of connection differs from that in your previous home, you may need a new broadband modem to ensure compatibility.
If your new home is in an apartment building, check whether the housing company offers a shared broadband service. This can be a convenient option, as such connections are often fast and reliable. If this is available, find out the cost and speed options.
A wired network connection requires an Ethernet cable, which is not typically included in rental apartments. You can purchase one from electronics stores or well-stocked supermarkets. The Ethernet cable is connected to a wall socket in the apartment, which may have one or more active ports depending on the size of the apartment. Internet can also be accessed via a SIM card or a dongle, although these are now less common.
Choosing the Right Plan and Internet Speed
The speed of the connection is another important factor to consider. Think about how you use the internet — for example, gaming, streaming, remote work, and other online services all require different levels of speed. Technological advances now allow for a smart home setup, where you can seamlessly connect various devices to your home WiFi network. You can integrate smart devices such as lights, thermostats, security cameras, appliances, and many others into a unified network. So consider your household’s specific needs when choosing your internet plan.
Once you’ve selected a suitable plan, check the terms of the contract. If you’re considering a fixed-term agreement, make sure you understand the length of the commitment and any cancellation policies. Many internet contracts are binding for a certain period, and early termination may incur extra costs.
Router and Modem
When moving, it’s a good time to check your internet browsing security. A firewall acts as a digital barrier that monitors traffic between your device and the internet. It blocks harmful or unwanted connections and helps protect your device from external threats such as hackers and data breaches. Installing and keeping your firewall up to date helps reduce exposure to online threats.
Firewall
Antivirus Protection
Antivirus software is a critical component of online security. It detects and removes harmful software such as viruses and malware, which can damage your device or steal personal data. These programs can also help block dangerous websites and alert you to suspicious downloads or links.
Protecting the devices used by your family is essential. Any device that connects to the internet is vulnerable to cyber threats — this includes computers, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and other smart devices. By installing firewall and antivirus software on all your family’s devices, you help keep personal data safe.
